GREEN: The wizards of basketball will invade the Green High School basketball gym next month for an evening of fun and fundraising all wrapped into one.
Similar to the famed Harlem Globetrotters, the Harlem Wizards will entertain with basketball hijinks on the court and with fans in the stands. The Wizards will make their initial appearance in Green at 7 p.m. April 19 to benefit the Green Local Schools and Green Parent Teachers Association.
Tickets are $10 each and, along with t-shirts, are on sale now at all Green Local schools.
Wendall Jackson, the district’s director of operations who hopes to fill the 1,645-seat gym, pitched the visit to the Board of Education this week, noting that the Wizards’ opponent will be Team Gang Green.
The latter will consist of Green schools faculty and staff, as well as students who can “make the team,” Jackson said, by raising funds in individual water jugs bearing their photos so students, teachers and school visitors can help contribute.
The top two students (male or female) will be added to the Gang Green squad, while the third-place fundraiser will become a cheerleader for the game, Jackson explained.
Board member Mark Herdlick has agreed to play, and is trying to recruit other board members, including members Lynn Wiggins and Bob Campbell. Board President Steve Foster didn’t take Herdlick's bait at the meeting, and member Connie Leonard was absent.
